November 10, 2023: LFG Stem Cells!!! (Day +215)
Saturday, November 11, 2023 · by kathy howe
Sam developed a slight temperature on Thursday afternoon: 99.0 F to start, then it started creeping up over the next few hours. He also had some stomach discomfort and lethargy, but no other “major” symptoms. We’ve been super fortunate to not have gotten many fevers during this journey, but the rule still applies, a sustained temp of 100.4 F most likely gets him a ticket to the ER. Since he still has his port in, sepsis is the main concern.
Later in the evening, it got to 100.2 so Sam called the on call doctor, as it was after hours by that point. Sam was looking for some Tylenol relief but Dr. Gupta advised him that Tylenol would mask any fever and that that would be problematic. Better to monitor and then call back if it went above 100.4. He also advised if it stayed below 100.1 F, Sam could sleep through the night uninterrupted. But if it was still teetering on the 100.4 level, he should set an alarm for 4 hours of sleep just to check. Dr. Gupta said it was probably a virus given the minor symptoms but given his immunocompromised state, viruses can still be problematic (his immune system is still around 50% or so).
Well guess what!??! His temperature didn’t go up! so he slept through the night and woke up to 98.6 F.
Proof that his immune system is working!!! LFG Stem Cells!!
It’s such a big deal: his body actually fought off a virus. Without any help. 🤯. Say that again: his body fought off a virus. Without. Any. Help. Please understand how important those last 3 words are.
And give your own immune system a big high five for us too — we should all appreciate ours more.
And FULeukemia!
