September 19, 2022: Just what you wanted……more vomit 🤢

Monday, September 19, 2022 · by kathy howe

Early Sunday morning (2:30 am or so), Sam woke up vomiting. And as we’ve talked about before, Sam is a super vomit machine when he vomits.  He lived up to his billing on Saturday night too but thankfully made it to the bathroom. He’s not taking any chemo medicine right now so we were concerned about a GI bug. This was his first time to show signs of illness beyond leukemia and we’ve been sufficiently prepped to beware of illness because his body a) doesn’t have the ability to show signs of infection beyond fever and b) sepsis is a real concern.

Fever above 100 gets him a do not pass go, go straight to the Emergency Room ticket but where does vomit fit in on this continuum of symptoms, you ask?  Me too. So I called the on-call oncologist at 2:50 am.

He didn’t have any other symptoms: no fever, no diarrhea (you know how much teenagers *love* to talk about poop — we talk about a lot more things now than we used to — but I still get the “Mooooooommm” and the obligatory eye roll. 🙄. #teensgottateen).

So we were advised just to monitor.  Turns out 1 vomit episode is ok. 2 vomit episodes = Emergency Room visit.  1 vomit episode plus fever = ER visit. 1 vomit + diarrhea = ER.  So now you are up to speed on the vomit continuum. Aren’t you glad you read this post?

So I gave him a Zofran (anti-nausea medication) and he went to sleep and slept until 10:30 am which is late for him.

No more additional symptoms on Sunday or Monday and Zofran continued to help the nausea so we got to stay home — yay!

"Aren’t you glad you read this post? " ALWAYS!! Thank you for sharing--we're here with you even if it's just via reading, thinking, inane commenting... :)

Thinking of you all. I know how scary it is to try and navigate the do we go or stay continuum. You all are amazing.

And that was the very question that started this entire journey so my bias is to go — and definitely biased to call the on call doc. Even though that totally gets the 🙄 from the teen and the now famous quote “don’t wrap me in bubble wrap!” (I didn’t tell him I called the on call oncologist yet 😬 #momsgottamom )

I am thinking of you all, especially Sam! I love reading the #teensgottateen and #momsgottamom! (-:

You’d think they’d have a laminated card with the rules on it for you. Glad you fell in the No ER column.

As the father of a kid with ulcerative colitis, I know all about how much kids love discussing their poop. It’s all poop all the time. They get used to the discussion stunningly quickly.

I think Sam would really appreciate it if you printed out the decision tree and posted it in his room as a floor to ceiling poster: 1 Vomit? 2 Vomit? 1 diarrhea? 1 gigantic diarrhea? Fever? Itchy bum? (What other questions can we add that make teens uncomfortable?)

We need more Uncle Bryan in our lives! Xoxo

Also pee — teens love to talk about pee too and of course, with GI bugs comes the risk of dehydration. And quality of diarrhea — that’s a great conversation starter! 😂

Oh and they love it when you call it “stool” 😂

Never be hesitant to contact the on call oncologist! Better to be cautious.

So glad this was a no ER incident ❤️ As others have suggested below, I think a laminated decision tree is called for. 😉 Oh, and all of you are just amazing!

Also, we need more Aunt Suchi in our lives xoxox!

You are such a super mom. Seriously. Sam is so lucky.
