September 13, 2022: Update
Greetings #TeamSam!
Sam’s response to treatment continues to be good but his blood cell counts are taking their time rebounding from the last treatment. This was the case after induction (the last phase of chemo he finished) too. His platelets are in range, which is the leading indicator, but his white blood cells continue to take their own sweet time. This is not a “bad thing” — it’s just his path through this phase of the marathon.
Our unconventional child now young adult now cancer warrior — continues to be, not surprisingly………………unconventional. 😊 ❤️
He will go to the outpatient clinic on Thursday to get his blood drawn again and we’ll see where the numbers are.
And we are still hopeful for Homecoming because after the first 2 weeks of chemotherapy in the hospital, his blood cell counts will need to rebound again so maybe 🤞🏼 that will delay him just enough to put HoCo within reach.
He also will receive his first dose of Evusheld, which is an investigational medicine that provides pre-exposure prophylaxis for Covid-19 in people who are immunocompromised. So we are happy about that as our teen loves being out and about in the world as much as possible, and we wholeheartedly support that and are grateful that Evusheld is there to give his immune system the support it needs for Covid-19.
And a funny note: Dr Lacayo came by to say hi at clinic yesterday and asked if Sam got to his parties over the weekend (since he didn’t get admitted on Thursday) and John told him Sam went to a football game. Dr. Lacayo asked, “you’re pushing your parents, testing the limits, right? Gotta do it — it’s the right age!”
