November 1, 2022: Halloween
Sam woke up tired so didn’t make to his 2 classes this morning but John had a great idea: Let’s go to Diddams and look at costumes so that got Sam out of bed and gave him a bit of energy. Yay.
John did comment that Sam was more tired than he’d expectedwhile they were walking around the store.
Sam rallied for the evening too and handed out candy to the throngs of kids who came by trick or treating. No joke: I bought over 1,000 pieces of candy thinking we’d give them out 3 at a time but thankfully John and Sam started out in Scrooge mode otherwise we would’ve been drained by 7:30 pm. And that’s not a good look. We probably saw 500+ kids (which is high for us — need to ask the neighbors up the street: they take a census every year 👍🏼). It was hoppin’ and we love it!
Sam and John and Milo sat on our porch couch, along with Zack’s awesomely carved pumpkin, our ghoul, and 1 of the wolf skeletons that John and Zack had nabbed at Home Depot earlier in October.
Note: Milo does *not* like inflatable costumes. He was chill otherwise.
Zack took off to trick or treat for a bit by himself and then go to the dog party (without the dog — this is often the case 🤷🏼♀️). But then it turned dark and we weren’t sure where he was and we didn’t have a return home plan. So I went to look for him. He wasn’t at the park. So my penguin costumed self walked around our neighborhood calling his name (later he said “I heard someone calling Zack.” Ummmmm…..then why didn’t you answer. You know — call and **respond** — like Marco Polo. C’mon. 😂)
He did finally reappear, with 2 neighborhood friends, at our house. No harm no foul — we were just a bit later than expected to our 2nd trick or treat destination with the soccer bros.
Sam took on the roll of costume critic too — but didn’t tell the kids his assessment — just gave them fewer candies 🤣. Mostly he just had thoughts for the 13+ year old set, which he shared in the down moments, with John.
I love those tween/teen/caught in the middle kids — they are the best ones: they are in between, revisiting their childhood, wanting more candy, wanting to be a teen who doesn’t want to trick or treat. It’s complicated. Who cares if they phone in their costume? Sam thinks he’s Simon Cowell (the 1.0 version from American Idol season 1). 😂
But he had a great time and we were glad he had the energy to sit outside and enjoy the festivities.
Happy Halloween y’all!

I'd rather see kids who are pushing it costume and age-wise trick-or-treating rather than getting up to bad mischief. Bring 'em on!
(hi neighbor!)
Just to share what Halloween is like in Australia, I wasn't sure if any kids would come around (because it's not a big deal here) but at 5, these teenagers came by, and I had nothing, so they got $1 aussie coins. So then I ran to the store, bought a couple of tubs of lollies (Aussie word for candy) and then had a total of 3 visits the rest of the night.
