November 01, 2023: Early Action Deadline (Day +216)

Wednesday, November 1, 2023 · by kathy howe
This weekend Sam learned what it feels like to crank out essays for a deadline: build those muscles! They will help you when you get to college. It certainly tested his attention span — but in a good way. The cool part was he invited us to be his co-pilots and give him feedback and ask questions. That didn’t happen before. Who’s to say if it’s maturity, or perspective gained, or the influence of having gone through a life altering clinical trial and transplant — it doesn’t matter. What matters is we had FUN WRITING COLLEGE ESSAYS. 🤯🤯 (and I am not being sarcastic).
We also had some stress. 😬
And some grouchiness. 🤬
Most importantly we had fun.  And he had time to reflect on his first 18 years on this Earth and on the people and experiences that shaped who he is today. He was able to put words to what is important to him and to his leukemia and transplant journey. And he appreciated all of it. ❤️ And I appreciated having a front row seat.
And he shipped 4 Early Action Applications *before* today’s deadline.  There are more ahead, of course. So stay tuned!
But for now, a loud and resolute Let’s Go Sam!!!! And FUCK YOU LEUKEMIA!
And a massive massive thanks to Jen White for helping him find his voice and being available on the quick to give feedback. So. Much. Gratitude.
Today I think there will be a lot of video games. Salve for overly exerted muscles. 🙂

He'll do great. It is a brutal and stupid process. But the good news is that college is amazing. Anywhere he is apply.

Yay Sam!! And Kathy and John, I can totally relate to the emojis in this post. Brutal, as David said.

Kathy, I hope those brain muscles enjoyed a total unwind. I bet it’s exciting now to watch for responses in the inbox. This is such an exciting college journey to follow!
