October 5, 2022: Weightloss…..Again.
Sam is down 13 lbs from 9/22 — not surprising as he has had very little solid food for the last week. Between the vomit and the mucositis, this has been extremely rough. The last 24 hours though have reminded us what is ahead more days than not after we push through the suckage.
But nutrition and calories are still a challenge for Sam given his high metabolism and sensitive palate (I remember the first time I cooked banana bread with egg beaters instead of real eggs — EGG BEATERS — Sam was probably 3 or maybe 4 years old — and his first reaction was “what did you do to the banana bread??” And it wasn’t in a good way 😆).
If you have any yummy ideas that are calorie and fat/protein/carb dense, please post them here. He loves flavorful food — loves ramen, Chinese food, sushi, Mexican food, black beans (not pinto), chicken and pork, sausage, hamburgers, cheese including feta and sharp cheddar — and usually likes spicy (but not sure where he is on that given the mucositis) and for the next 4 days I hope to fill him with as much homemade or restaurant made yummy food as I can (he got a “bye” for the weekend and won’t be admitted for Round 2 until Sunday night — more on that in the next post).
(Added on in an edit): Doesn’t like: nut butters, Fish, mushrooms, chunks or even bits of tomatoes (but puréed is ok). Isn’t into ice cream or sweet things to drink right now
Smoothie recipes that you like with fruit and coconut oil or other fat sources that have a mild taste/taste blends in with fruits plus yogurt might work too.

My other trick was to buy huge bowls so he can start with a XL portion of food (if he can take it). Otherwise I'd finish a bowl and not be excited about getting seconds, but if it was in front of me, my hunger would just drive me to the bottom of the bowl if it was tasty.
