November 10, 2022: Update: Still Home

Hi Team Sam!
The teen warrior is at home still as his white blood cell counts went down to 700 instead of up to 1500 like we were hoping. This is not surprising because he has had the the tame-ish version of the nasty cold that has been making its way around Palo Alto and the surrounding communities. While it has been tenacious, it hasn’t resulted in a fever so we are grateful for that. Also, they realized that his mercaptopurine medicine/chemo dose (“6 MP”) is probably too high so they took him off of that on November 1 and he’s been chemo free for 9 days — yay! The energy level and the color of his face are definitely better (though I know the 6 MP is key to his long-term health and living a leukemia free life so am grateful that it’s been kicking the leukemia’s stealthy butt from the inside). Taking it off the medicine schedule temporarily also to facilitates the recovery of his white blood cell counts.
So we’re looking at Tuesday 11/15 with a *slight* possibility of Sunday 11/13 for his admission date (NP Gina said he could get another blood draw on Saturday to see where he is, so he’ll drop into the Bass Center at 9:15 am — to which he replied “Ugh. Why so early?” #teen)
And we are adjusting our Hawaii departure and return to accommodate this change too. Hopefully he’ll be the GOAT leukemia patient again and get discharged on Friday 11/18 and then we’ll be (probably) departing Monday or Tuesday and staying for 4-5 days.
So that’s the update. Also, Sam and Zack have been playing more chess in the last number of days ❤️
