September 25, 2022: Ooooof. Rough night.

Sunday, September 25, 2022 · by kathy howe

Sam’s nausea turned to vomit last night and was every 30 mins or so starting at 9 pm and then from midnight to 4 it was every hour and then since 4 he hasn’t vomited but has been fitful as if he would vomit twice.

They are giving him medicine to help but it still persists. And he hasn’t eaten anything since the banana he had for breakfast, which he, not surprisingly, vomited. 😣

He’s a trooper though. He just went back to sleep after each episode. ❤️💪🏼 But he is more discouraged as well.  Not long term discouraged, just short term discouraged.  Vomiting, as we all know, sucks. So if you could write a few words of encouragement below, I will pass them along to him.

The good news is the hydration therapy is working as are his kidneys. Sometimes high dose methotrexate can reduce their function.

So for all I want him to come home today, I also know that nights like last night are better spent in the hospital.

We’ll see what today holds.

Sam, sounds like you had a rough night, so sorry to hear that. You have a lot of folks who care about you and are willing to do anything we can to help. Find out what comforts you (music, movies, etc) that can help take your mind off the moment. - take care, we're thinking about you

Sam, there will be ups and downs but you’ve got this. Stay strong. Know that you have a whole village of people who are behind you, many of whom may have only met you once or twice through your amazing parents.

Sam, we were so sorry to hear about your rough night. Hope things will get better; can’t imagine going through that, but it sounds like you’re handling it as well as possible. Hang in there; we’re pulling for you and thinking about you.

You got this, Sam! cancer is a tough opponent, but remember that you are one tough kid! Think of your soccer training, about the biggest beating you took there and how it made you stronger to fight the next opponent. Same thing for last night: it was brutal, but you came through it! Rest up and know that after that, you can take on whatever comes next! ♥️♥️♥️

I'm sending all my love. It really stinks to go through that, and I hope he's on the other side soon

Vomiting = not fun. I'm so sorry to hear that you've had a rough night. Like all moments, good and bad, this one will pass. Sending you love and caring wishes.

So sorry to hear about your rough night, Sam, vomiting non-stop sucks big time!! I hope today is much better and you're able to get some rest. We are all thinking of you and rooting for you <3

Ugh, tough night. My only distraction is that I think a night of vomiting is the best ab workout he can get. Really works his core muscles. By the end of this he will have a ripped set of abs to show off!

Sam...the Merkel clan is rooting for you big time! Hate that you had such a rough night. Hope today is 1000 times better. xoxo

I’m not exactly sure how to put a silver lining on a night of vomiting… So I will just say that Ken Jake and I are all rooting for you. Hang in there! You’ve got this!

Sam,I haven't seen you since you were a little boy, but your warm and sunny personality has stayed with me all these years. I can tell that you are a warrior and that you'll win this war.

I have the photos out from when you, Sam, and your Mom and Zach were visiting Grandma Linda and Grandpa Dick and you met our son, Jeff, and his wife, Beth (both of whom were your parents' high school classmates and friends), and their three children. We lived next door to Dick and Linda. I'm so touched by your courage. We have a candle lit. Hang in there, Sam. You too, Kathy, John and Zach. Sending lots and lots of love and healing thoughts.

I had a friend who went through this same awfulness and when she had her last treatment I made her a cake that read “Fuck Methotrexate”. I had to make it because no bakery would :) Sam, I look forward to enjoying a big piece of Fuck Methotrexate cake with you!

Rooting for Sam all day long. I don't think teens care for inspirational quotes, but this is for you Kathy: Fate whispered to the warrior, "You cannot withstand this storm," and the warrior whispered back, "I am the storm."

There's a family legend, maybe about my grandfather, on an rough ocean voyage, vomiting over the side of the ship alongside other seasick passengers. Some sailor mocked him and said "What's wrong? Got a weak stomach?"My grandfather replied, "No, I'm throwing it as far as anyone else." Hang in there, Sam!

Sam - cancer sucks and chemo sucks - so sorry you are enduring this. Wishing for you that last night was the worst and that its easier from here on out. You have lots of people (some like me that you've never met) pulling for you and wishing you feel better soon.
