July 05, 2023: 4th of July reflection

Thursday, July 6, 2023 · by kathy howe

We had a fun 4th of July — at home this year!!  Yay. Was thinking about a key conversation I had, on the phone, last 4th of July, while sitting on the hallway floor outside Sam’s LPCH 500 unit room.  It was with a college friend, who is also a Heme/onc doctor for adults in Southern California. We were 6 days in.

He interrupted his festivities with his family to talk to me and step me through some of the whirlwind that was blasting us. I remember him explaining “risk stratification” (risk wuuuut???) and he told me about something called “blina” with more syllables after (how do you spell that?) and I I wrote copious notes and asked many questions.  He explain and re-explained things to my very foggy and tired brain,  He helped me find my first sense of structure in this crazy new world we had just been portal-ed into. I left the conversation less scared and feeling more efficacious. I still had a heavy heart and a heavy load to carry but that conversation was a significant milestone in this journey and I am eternally grateful to him. 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼

I am so grateful that your college friend/heme/onc doctor provided the support you needed at one of the darkest moments of your life when you had a very heavy heart and load to carry. And now you can explain "blina" and so much more to those following in your path. You have shared a powerful and inspiring reflection. On behalf of all of us who love you and all of your family, we are profoundly grateful, and we thank you for sharing, Kathy. We love you all.
Go Team Sam!!
