Good weekend, maybe last in the hospital?
Everything is going well. Sam's white blood cell count continues to rise, and today was the first day we saw neutrophils -- the most abundant type of white blood cells, and the main ones that help fight infection. Sam's ANC (absolute neutrophil count) was 270, up from zero the past couple of weeks -- when it gets to 500 (I think likely tomorrow morning) they consider the stem cells engrafted, and a 72 hour clock starts ticking until they're comfortable letting Sam come home. A few other things to sort out between now & then, but I think we're looking at +/- Friday.
Docs have been very positive on Sam's trajectory in all ways. He persisted through the conditioning, he's been eating something every day, and he gets out of bed and moves around each day as well (to move to his PC to play Overwatch, mostly, but also to shower, etc).
We're not out of the woods yet in terms of complications, etc, but so far we are on just about the ideal curve.
More important than whether we get home on Friday or Sunday or even a week from now, though: Sam is starting to describe himself as "healthy" in various conversations. Such a crucial corner to turn.
We don't know what the future will bring in terms of GvH or relapse, or anything else life throws at Sam.
But for now at least, for the first time in nearly a year, Sam (and all of us) have the feeling that he's healthy, and on a path that he wants.
